Thanya Nathan c. Kerala will become the first 100% blind judge. Nathan has topped the list of persons with disabilities in the judicial examination.
Before becoming a judge, Thanya was a practicing lawyer in Taliparamba, Kannur district.
24-year-old Thanya will be the first 100% blind judge of the state of Kerala and the second 100% blind judge of the country.
In 2013, Brahmanand Sharma of Rajasthan became the first blind judge. Sir John Anthony Wall is considered to be the first 100% blind judge in the world.
Sir John Anthony was appointed Deputy Master of the High Court in the Chancery Division in the United Kingdom in 1991.
In October 2025, Justice J.B. Pardiwala and R. The Mahadevan bench, while giving a decision on a hearing, said, ‘Blindness cannot reduce the qualification of a candidate to become a judge.’
The Supreme Court on 25 November 2024 allowed 100% visually impaired law students to appear in the Common Law Entrance Test (CLAT) Post Graduate Examination 2024-25 to be held on 1 December.
